Discover Bahia’s Capital City & Coconut Coast

Standard DreamTrip
Explore Salvador’s historic city center, sunny Coconut Coast, culturally significant churches, fortress ruins, endangered sea turtles & much more — plus, you’ll be treated to suburb authentic dining experiences at popular restaurants. Book by October 19.

About Your Trip

Immerse yourself in a world of wonder with a stay in the coastal city of Salvador in Bahia state. As the second most popular tourist destination in Brazil, it captivates with a landscape of beaches, rainforests and historically important sites. On this 4-day DreamTrip, you’ll delve into the region's unique culture on comprehensive tours that represent an incredibly diverse, centuries-old heritage.

Your first excursion takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage site called Historic Centre of Salvador de Bahia. There, you’ll visit Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, known for an interior completely covered in gold-leaf woodwork, and Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men, constructed in 1746 to serve the Afro-Brazilian brotherhoods. Hop on the Elevator Lacarda and travel down to the lower section of the historic center for amazing views of Bay of All Saints. Continue to Mercado Model, the main arts and crafts market, and Capoeira Angola School that teaches this ancient martial art. Finally, at 18th-century Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, admire its impressive facade with rococo-style detailing.

The next day, get ready for memorable adventures as you travel along the famed Coconut Coast. Stop at Sapiranga Ecological Reserve and take a buggy ride to the ruins of Castelo de Garcia d'Avila and then to Pojuca River where you can swim if you want. End the day at TAMAR Project, the world’s largest project intended to protect endangered sea turtles.

And, what better way to capture a sense of place than through its food? On Day 2, you’ll savor typical local cuisine plus a show celebrating Afro-Brazilian people’s heritage with traditional dances. On Day 3, head to a popular family-run restaurant featuring Brazilian and Portuguese cuisine and take part in a caipirinha workshop.

What we love:
• Now in ruins, Castelo de Garcia d'Avila comprised a watchtower, castle and church. Visitors can walk through the remains and get a sense of its history as a medieval structure.
• Be sure to taste Salvador’s iconic street food — acaraje (stuffed deep-fried bean cake).
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

Salvador, the capital city of the state of Bahia, overlooks the Bay of All Saints on Brazil’s eastern coastline. Its history dates to 1549 when Portuguese explorers began to settle on its shores. Over time, Salvador grew into an important port city linked to the trading of sugar cane and African slaves. In 1888, slavery was abolished, and by then, the city had received five million Africans. As a result of this influx, present-day Salvador is home to one of the largest populations of Africans outside of the African continent. Descendants created Afro-Brazilian communities that have become main contributors to the Bahia area’s distinctive culture as seen with Axe music, capoeira dance and food such as acaraje.
